This Months Newletter deals with implications of stress.

As hypnotherapists we help people to deal with stress. Whether smoking, weight management, pain control, anxieties, phobias, or fear of public speaking we help our clients rid themselves of certain stressors or at least react to them differently. In my opinion, it is our area of expertise! Therefore, I thought I would talk about two specific areas in which stress affects our health. This information can be helpful to your own knowledge but also to knowledge that you can impart to your clients.

Stress May Help Cancer Cells Resist Treatment

From Wake Forest University School of Medicine, on April 11th 2007, it has just been reported that the stress hormone epinephrine causes changes in prostate and breast cancer cells that may make them resistant to cell death.

Dr. Kulik, who is an assistant professor of cellulare biology involved with the project beieves that the study results implies that emotional stress may contribute to the development of cancer and may also reduce the effectiveness of cancer treatments.

It is known that levels of epinephrine, (which is produced by the adrenal glands) are sharply increased in response to stressful situations and can remain continuously elevated during persistent stress and depression.

'If stress is linked to cancer, what is the cellular mechanism?'

Studying prostate and breast cancer cells in the laboratory, Kulik and colleagues found that a protein called BAD -- which causes cell death -- becomes inactive when cancer cells are exposed to epinephrine.

"A study from Canada showed that men who took beta blockers for hypertension for at least four years had an 18 percent lower risk of prostate cancer," said Kulik. "These drugs block the effects of epinephrine, which could explain the finding. Another study of men after radical prostatectomy reported increased mood disturbances, which are often associated with elevated stress hormones. Although these studies do not directly address the role of stress hormones, they suggest that stress hormones may play an important role in prostate cancer."

Kulik said, "It may be important for patients who have increased responses to stress to learn to manage the effects. And, the results point to the possibility of developing an intervention to block the effects of epinephrine."

My thoughts are let hypnotherapists be a major part in that intervention!

The study results are reported on-line in the Journal of Biological Chemistry and will appear in a future print issue.

People who respond poorly to stress may see their cholesterol levels shoot up years later.

A study shows that people who respond to stress poorly years later may see their cholesterol levels shoot up.The ultimate effect is relatively small, but researchers say that this it is yet another reason to get a handle on runaway anxiety.

"I would be surprised if the effects of stress were as big as the impact of lifestyle on cholesterol," said the lead author of the study, Dr. Andrew Steptoe of the University College London. "What this study does is help us understand exactly how stress is linked with heart disease."

Chronic stress is associated with a range of problems, including heart attacks, the common cold and even a shorter life expectancy. Steptoe's study, published in Health Psychology, looked at nearly 200 middle-aged men and women to see if stressful events triggered higher cholesterol three years later.

After having their cholesterol levels measured, the participants were put through a series of mild, nerve-rattling tests, such as picking the correct names of various colors that were rapidly flashing on a computer screen. They were tracked for changes in heart rate and other signs to see how they handled the pressure.

Three years later, the researchers measured cholesterol levels again. As can be generally expected with growing older, all showed higher levels than before. However, those who had the highest stress response to the test also had the highest cholesterol levels three years later. Compared to participants who seemed to take the tests in stride, the most stressed-out group was three times more likely to have dangerously high LDL, or bad cholesterol, down the road.

No one can avoid stress completely, the key is how you handle it. This is where hypnotherapists can help!

It is the combination of exposure to stressful conditions and the way in which we respond to those conditions that is crucial.

This spike in cholesterol that was found was independent of the usual culprits, like being overweight or smoking. Steptoe suggests that stress may produce more nervous energy in the form of harmful fatty acids and sugar, or it may even interfere with the body's ability to get rid of cholesterol. The rise in cholesterol was relatively modest, Steptoe added, at least in comparison to a poor diet or other causes.

With stress linked to heart problems already, higher cholesterol is the last thing anyone would need. ================================================================================

I will be appearing on the Discovery Channel's "MythBusters" segment on hypnosis on April 14th at 7PM and on April 21 at noon. The segment is called "Voice Extinguisher".

Two days of shooting and lots of editing! It was a little unusual due to the use of EEG leads and very, very, bright lights that were bothering my subjects. I wasn't allowed to do a pre-talk or tell them anything about hypnosis.

And now a word from our sponsor......

I will be teaching my 1 day Hypnosis for Nurses and other medical professionals course (doctors, EMT and others are invited) at the Hypnotherapy Center in Oakland, California. Nursing ceu's are available. Contact Marilyn Gordon at the Hypnotherapy Center at (800)-398-0034 or email for information: mgordon@hypnotherapycenter.com . The class will be given April 22nd or go to my website www.hypnotherapyforhealth.com

November 2006 Newsletter (oops sorry for the previous unformatted form)

Did you know that November is National Stop Smoking Month !
Hypnosis patients are more than twice as likely to quit smoking. According to a University of Iowa report, in 600 different studies involving 72,000 people across America and Europe, hypnosis was three times as effective as nicotine replacement methods and 15 times as effective as trying to quit alone.

But did you know.......Starting young may make it harder to quit smoking as an adult. New research reveals nicotine actually changes the cells in the brains of young smokers.

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center exposed young and middle-aged people to nicotine and compared their responses to nicotine exposure. They report the younger subjects, especially males, had a pronounced breakdown of nerve cell membranes in the brain. These changes could alter the "hardwiring" of the brain and make an addiction to nicotine in adult years more likely.

One in four teenagers are smokers in the United States. While this number is down from years past, some experts say not enough is being done to help the teens who are actively addicted to nicotine.

I encourage all you hypnotists out there, to go and market yourselves to the high schools. Put an article in the school newspaper! A win-win situation.

And did you know..... heavy smoking may reduce female fertility by directly affecting the uterus -- making it less receptive and reducing the chances the embryo will implant, according to research published online (Thursday 9 November) in Europe's leading reproductive medicine journal Human Reproduction.

The finding, comes as a result of comparing the pregnancy rates between non-heavy smokers and heavy smokers, all of whom received donated eggs.

Smoking has long been known to affect female fertility, but this study is the first to examine the impact of smoking in women who have received donated eggs. This allows for the most objective assessment of the role of the uterus in the outcome of IVF.

The researchers studied all the first cycles of egg-donated IVF treatments  741 in non-heavy smokers (under 10 cigarettes a day) and 44 in heavy smokers (over 10 a day). None of the women's partners were smokers and none of the egg donors were heavy smokers. The two groups of recipients were comparable and the number of embryos transferred in each cycle (between one and three) was also comparable between the groups.

Lead researcher Dr  Soares, said: "The non-heavy smokers had a significantly higher pregnancy rate, with over half becoming pregnant (52.2%), compared with just over a third (34.1%) of the heavy smokers. This means we have confirmed previous data that show light smoking has no significant impact on IVF cycles, either through affecting the egg or the uterus. However, heavy smokers have a much lower chance of achieving pregnancy. The fact that we see this result in a situation in which the egss were donated by other women demonstrates that cigarette smoking negatively affects the receptiveness of the uterus independently of its effect on ovarian function, and this is a new finding. The clinical implications of the findings were clear. Tobacco makes the uterus less likely to accept an embryo."

We should now let our clients know, if they are heavy smokers, that even if fertilization takes place, they have less chance of achieving a successful pregnancy, whether they are trying to conceive naturally, or through IVF, and particularly with donated eggs.

One more reason for females to use hypnosis to stop smoking NOW!

And just in case you missed it.......if you would like to see the video of part of a smoking cessation session with hypnotist, Paul McKenna , and Ellen Degeneres.

Two Interesting Urology Hypnosis cases:

The first case, was a lady who presented with stones in both her kidney and ureter. They were stuck and quite painful! During hypnosis, I asked her "Wise Mind" about the stones and if their was something she needed to pay attention to regarding them. The issue of anger came up. This led to using Time Line Therapy to regress to the first time she ever felt those feelings and get the positive learnings. What she learnt was to "Just let go". Suggestions of changing the chemistry of her body to eat the outside of the stones away where given along with suggestions and reinforcement of "just letting go". A few weeks later she called and let me know the stones that were "unpassable" had passed.

The second case, was a man with a urgency of urination whenever he had to go someplace. He had gone to a Urologist and there was no Urology pathology going on. (This is a very important step when dealing with medical issues!) Utilizing Time Line Therapy, he remembered a time when he was 7, in which he had diarrhea on a bus trip and had dirtied his pants and felt totally out of control and that he "wasn't okay". On his own, he regressed further back to a time when he was 4 years old and wet the bed. Once again, he felt out of control and that he wasn't okay. We got the positive learnings that he needed to get that he WAS okay. Upon emerging from hypnosis he still wanted to know why the urgency suddenly happened six years ago. An instant induction followed immediately and I asked him to go into his mind with a "Magic Flashlight " to search fo the reason. He instantly opened his eyes with full knowledge! He had lost his job and this was a way for him to be okay and to be in control! Since I always teach each and every client  E.F.T. , he had a great tool to use for any future feelings of not being okay or not being in control. His bladder problem is gone and he knows how powerful hypnotherapy can be if he wants to work more deeply.

The finding, comes as a result of comparing the pregnancy rates between non-heavy smokers and heavy smokers, all of whom received donated eggs.

Smoking has long been known to affect female fertility, but this study is the first to examine the impact of smoking in women who have received donated eggs. The allows the most objective assessment of <em>the role of the uterus </em>in the outcome of IVF.

Welcome to Hypnotherapy for Health Newsletter

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The media has not really given this any attention perhaps because it is uncomfortable to think of children as having cancer. Children's cancers are usually more agressive than adults'and are frequently treated more invasively and differently. The treatments of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy can have long-term medical effects on their developing bodies and their developing minds. Later on, there can be problems of fertility, decreased growth hormone and thyroid function, sight and hearing problems, problems with internal organs such as the kidney, spleen, heart and liver, and even an increased chance of developing a second type of cancer.

Medical tests and procedures can be scary and painful for a child! We can help in using our skills of hypnotherapy and E.F.T. We have the ability to ease their mind and their body. We can help them relax and feel calmer, ease the side effects of treatments including pain and nausea, visualize the cancer being gone and cope in general. Children so easily and effortlessly go into hypnosis. I like to use the idea of a "magic flashlight" with children. They easily go into "the control room" with their active imaginations where the "magic flashlight" can illuminate whatever needs to be found or readjusted or fixed or whatever they come up with.

Parents of children with cancer have created a Web site to help other parents. It is www.acor.org/ped-onc/survivors

Cancer can easily cause stress, anxiety or depression. Treatments like chemotherapy, radiation or hormone therapy are all difficult to take and each patient has to adjust to the process. Sometimes concerns so impact daily life that patients develop difficulty adjusting to all that is going on. This means they have problems dealing with everyday living. We are used to using our skills to help our clients regarding these issues and they work so well. It is a known fact that the very act of going into hypnosis will increase your white blood cell count!

In this issue, however, I am going to address some possible visualizations based on the latest scientific research and studies regarding cancer growth. There is some research out there that has given me some ideas to utilize in what I call "True Life Imagery Hypnosis" ™.  In the July 31 issue of the " Journal of Cell Biology", researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have found that a molecular motor helps a cell determine which way is up. The sense of top and bottom is often lost in cells that become cancerous and may be an important factor in metastasis. Cells depend on the location of a number of proteins and lipids to recognize and maintain their polarity. Moving these lipids and proteins from where they are produced to where they are needed is a dynamic process that perhaps we as hypnotherapists can help when designing our creative visualizations.

Dr. Athar Chishti, wanted to understand how the lipid "PIP3" was sent to where it was needed at the growing tips of the cells. It was determined that a molecular motor protein called a kinesin that they had discovered interacted with PIP3 binding protein. They showed that the kinesin and this binding protein motored the PIP3 along microtubules -- the tracks upon which the kinesins move their cargoes. They also showed that the kinesin-binding adaptor and PIP3 were found together at the tips of the nerve cells It was found that when the adaptor binds PIP3, it is delivered to the membrane where it is needed, and if you block this process, polarity is lost. In some cells, like neurons, there are dramatic differences in the structure and function of the different ends of a cell. Loss of cell polarity is often the first step in converting a normal cell to a cancer cell, Chishti said. This is something I feel we can use to help our cancer patients.

Another piece of research talks about the difference between friend and foe:

The latest generation of cancer chemotherapeutic drugs specifically targets mutant enzymes or "oncoproteins" that have run amok and now promote uncontrolled cell growth. Cancer cells, with their backs against the wall, have the tendency to fight back. A major goal of cancer research is to frustrate these acts of cellular desperation. In a forthcoming issue of Cancer Cell, investigators at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies uncover one means cancer cells use to stay alive and in doing so suggest a strategy to overcome their tendency to fight back. The study, shows that resistance to the chemotherapeutic drug rapamycin is mediated by the survival factor NF-kB.

Rapamycin, like the pharmaceutical superstar Gleevec, which revolutionized the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia, is a so-called signal transduction inhibitor or STI, a small molecule that stifles inappropriate growth signals sent by mutant proteins in cancer cells. The Hunter lab previously showed that mouse cells lacking tumor suppressors known as TSC genes are more susceptible to the lethal effects of chemotherapeutic agents than are normal cells.

Now, the team found that human cells lacking TSC genes were vulnerable to chemotherapeutic attack because they couldn't activate a major line of defense mediated by the Nuclear Factor kappa B, known as NF-kB, which triggers both inflammatory and survival responses by inducing transcription of specific genes.

Not only did this explain why TSC null cells are vulnerable to insult, but it also provided biochemical evidence that there is crosstalk between two survival mechanisms. The findings show for the first time that the TSC complex can regulate the NF-kB signaling cascade.

The experiments also explained a paradox: TSC null cells treated with rapamycin actually survived cellular insult better than untreated cells-a highly inauspicious outcome if the goal is to kill cancer cells. By increasing NF-kB activity in the TSC null cells when they were exposed to chemotherapeutic drugs.

Rapamycin, an immunosuppressant used to block organ rejection after transplants, also inactivates proteins stimulating cell division and in clinical trials has been combined with other drugs to halt cancer cell growth.

But to cancer cells, rapamycin is both friend and foe. "Rapamycin is not as successful as initially expected in treating cancer," explains Ghosh. "Instead of killing cells, you end up triggering a survival response in them." This study, however, suggests that taking NF-kB out of the game would make rapamycin less "friendly."

A major problem of chemotherapy is that sooner or later cancer cells develop resistance, which requires higher and higher doses of chemotherapeutics. Rapamycin-mediated killing of cancer cells could be increased by inhibiting the function of NF-kB proteins.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another piece of research:

Scientists have found a way to trick cancer cells into committing suicide. Most living cells contain a protein called procaspase-3, which, when activated, changes into the executioner enzyme caspase-3 and initiates programmed cell death, called apoptosis. In cancer cells, however, the signaling pathway to procaspase-3 is broken. As a result, cancer cells escape destruction and grow into tumors.

Paul J. Hergenrother, a professor of chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and in the publication journal Nature Chemical Biology says, "We have identified a small, synthetic compound that directly activates procaspase-3 and induces apoptosis. By bypassing the broken pathway, we can use the cells' own machinery to destroy themselves."

The researchers tested the compound's efficacy in cell cultures and in three mouse models of cancer. The researchers also showed that PAC-1 killed cancer cells in 23 tumors obtained from a local hospital.

Cell death was correlated with the level of procaspase-3 present in the cells, with more procaspase-3 resulting in cell death at lower concentrations of PAC-1.

So, how does all this apply to our work as hypnotherapists? In our visualizations, we can suggest that the cells are once again finding their top and their bottom. Visualizing the cancer cells just giving up! Talk to the proteins and explain that they can just stop stimulating unwanted cell growth. Let those cancer cells just stop their growth. Visualize activating these executioner enzymes to help the cancer commit suicide. Let's help them to turn the motor on and deliver. Use our clients creativity and our own. The possibilities are endless and as individual as our clients.
